Issue 14: VertigoMan & Spaceman

See the guys from Atteridgeville (aka pheli) with skill, creativity, talent, brains, humor and love for local music bring on a new meaning to NEW AGE CRETIVITY. They took K.Os’ Caracara (the song with the highest YouTube views) and flipped it to something amazing. #IPapaNeChakalaka was just the beginning of more to come from Spaceman and Vertigoman together with their crew.

First things first.-Let’s talk about this #IPapaNeChakalaka, how did it come about?

It was just one of those things where we were on our way to buy food ko pheli, the song came on the radio and we just started playing around with it. But before that we had decided to do the Munchies Mixtape so we were looking for content and it had to be about food and Cararcara just seemed to go in that direction.

What was the plan once the video was shot, moving forward?

The plan was just to drop it on YouTube to build up hype for the tape and to also help get some attention for Domestic Movement who had just dropped their first mixtape. I think because we choose to use the koo cans people think we had other intentions when we did it, but truth be told we did not expect to get so much love.

What has been the moves since the video went viral, how did it get viral, what is K.O saying about this all, is he impressed, put off, is he showing love?

Social media is big and that was the tool that we used to just get it around, but there were a few people who really helped us push on the first day to get to 2000 views to name a few, Blacklight,Towdee Mac, Sizwe Dhlomo, Stoney_Dipset, Stoan Seate, Trompie, (the Beatmachine)the whole Domestic Movement Crew and so many more at the top of my head those are a few that a can name. We don’t really have a direct link to K.O but I don’t think he really had any problems with it, coz it’s a sense of appreciation from us as fans. But we hope he was cool with it maybe we’ll get the chance to meet him one day and find out his opinion.

What’s your take on New Age Creativity? (Pushing boundaries, evolution, doing things differently type thing)

We see people pushing the boundaries of creativity on the daily in other countries and it’s what we choose to do with it that counts. To some extent we are one of the first if not the first to do Parodies in South Africa or even Africa which is a dope thing.

In terms of looking at the industry what we doing shows growth in and if we can keep up the creativity who knows what we can achieve. The key is to never doubt your own ability once creativity strikes, if you share it with someone and they like it chances are there are people out there that will feel the same way.

Apart from the #IPapaNeChakalaka and Parodies move, what are you guys about, what do you do?

Collen Tau aka Cox1tau “Spaceman” graduated with a Diploma in Media and Journalism in 2010 and has since been involved in numerous projects, from starting his own clothing brand to vice-chairperson of an NGO called Aga Sechaba as well being a D.O.P at Tshwane TV, The Learning Channel and Redtape Films, a Pretoria based Production Company that shoots music videos for some of South Africa’s hottest names in music.

Moses “Dro” Tau is an aspiring director and attends the Tshwane University of Technology; he is in his final year of studies. Currently studying towards his diploma in Multimedia, he also works with Redtape Films while doing freelance work on the side. He has worked as far as Cape Town at a private Film Company called Homebrew Films that shoots content for M-net and KykNet to name but a few

Vertigo well …… if we told you we would have to kill you hahahaha but all in all you know him and you like him, so o ska di bala wa bona? Ya blyn

Do you think more of this creativity and out the box thinking needs to happen to lift up the culture activities? Why?

Yes, as much as people are creative in their music, how do you take it further than your hit song or iPapa ne Chakalaka? We are not just talking about food in our spoofs because we love food but because we see it as something than can open doors for us and help others for example with things like charity work. I mean there are 50 thousand people who love our work, that’s 50 thousand people who we could urge to donate food and we’d be able to give 50 thousand hungry kids a loaf of bread or a can of koo, you feel me?

Has KO made any offers, talked business, money?

Yes they’ve been in contact but we can’t really delve too far into that, but we certainly do have other offers from some well known brands that you might be seeing on our next spoofs.

Is the planned mixtape still in the works? Tell us more about that. Features, production, team…

Definitely, at the moment we already got about 4 tracks done and with mostly Vertigo’s verses, One thing people need to understand is that Vertigo man isn’t a Rapper per say, we not trying to package him as an artist, his a creative, his a canvas that we can paint into anything, never mind the fact that he doesn’t do public speaking and that’s where his spaceman comes in. With that being said there won’t be any features on the mixtape, we not approaching it that way, but it will tie up to Some Domestic Movement projects at the end and there will be a couple of songs recorded by other people but it’s not really features in the sense that there are verses and concepts that we all work on and bring to life.

How did Vertigos’ outfit come about?

Well Vertigo started out doing events and was part of a event called Status Quo, so they basically put together the outfit and we just took it and ran with it coz we thought it was different in that we didn’t need a balaclava or something like that, it reminded us of a super hero suit you know.

What’s the next track that you are planning to take over?
